2020 Emails from Joan Gralla:

WIAA Officials:

I hope this email finds you and your family healthy and safe during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

The following are reminders and some new information I wanted you to be aware of:

  1. Fall sports rules books will not be mailed until late July.  Therefore, exam and rules video deadline dates will be adjusted accordingly. Once those dates are determined they will be posted on the WIAA website.

  2. There will be no late fee charged for the 2020-21 school year to those individuals that are waiting until closer to their sport season to renew their license.

  3. Baseball, softball and track & field officials are not being charged the $15 sport fee for the 2020-21 school year.

  4. Baseball, softball and track & field officials will not be sent any new rules books for the 2020-21 school year. Rules books from 2019-20 should be saved for use during 2020-21.

  5. The Bulletin for the 2020-21 school year will be an online publication only – no copies will be mailed.

  6. The WIAA is working on return to play guidelines for our member schools.  Once these guidelines are finalized, I will notify all officials as to how you can access them on our website.

  7. To view the results of the most recent survey Referee Magazine did regarding COVID-19 and the return to officiating – click on link below: https://www.wiaawi.org/Portals/0/PDF/Officials/Return%20to%20Officiating.pdf?ver=vy_afldVK6lm5n7vRZLERw%3d%3d

***WIAA Licensed Softball Officials*** April 30, 2020

The WIAA 2020-21 official’s licensing renewal application will be available on our website May 1, 2020.  Please renew your license by June 5, 2020.

You again have two options to choose from when renewing your 2020-21 official’s license.

Option 1 (preferred):  Complete the application online and pay with either a Visa or Mastercard.  If you choose this option – do the following:

You must login with the email we have in your profile information.  If your email has changed, please make sure to change your email in your profile before you renew your license.  Under OFFICIALS on the WIAA website www.wiaawi.org  choose Online Licensing. You will select the option to renew your license. Proceed from there and follow the prompts.

Reciprocity and individuals using the military initiative are also able to license online.  Reciprocity must include verification that they are licensed in their home state for the 2020-21 school year and military individuals must include verification of military service.

For those individuals that will still be in high school for 2020-21, you must have your athletic director renew your license.  High school students cannot renew online, if you do, you will be charged the licensing fees.  If you are graduating from high school after the 2019-20 school year, you can license online as you will now have to pay the licensing fees.

Option 2: Print the application from our website and send via USPS.   Under OFFICIALS on the WIAA website www.wiaawi.org  choose Become an Official, you will then be taken to the page where you can print the 2020-21 licensing application, fill it out and mail it with a check to the address on the application.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you for your continued service as a WIAA licensed official.

***WIAA Licensed Softball Officials*** April 21, 2020

“I am sure none of us ever imagined an end to the 2019-20 school year would happen like this.  I hope you and your entire family are healthy and safe from COVID-19.

Regarding the licensing fee you paid for softball for the 2019-20 school year:

  1. Rules books have been mailed.

  2. Insurance premiums have been paid.

  3. Background checks have been paid for and completed for those that were required to have one this year.

Therefore, since funds have already been used for the above-mentioned items, a complete refund of your 2019-20 licensing fee is not able to be made.

The WIAA will refund you the $15 sport fee.  If you choose to request this refund it will be made after I receive an email from you requesting such refund.  You can email me at jgralla@wiaawi.org  This refund will come to you through the United States Postal Service in the form of a check.

If you decide to request this refund, I would like you to be aware of the following:

The Board of Control at their meeting on April 21, 2020 decided the following:  The Board voted to extend the unrestricted summertime coaching contact regulations for spring sports only. This action will permit school teams that include the current year’s seniors to assemble and conduct practices and competitions for 30 days, provided restrictions on assembling in groups are removed, until the start of a student’s fall sport season.  Therefore, if you choose to be refunded, you will not be considered a licensed official in softball for the 2019-20 school year and you would not be able to officiate any of these potential competitions, since WIAA licensed officials will be required.  Also, if you officiate any type of youth events during the summer (if any will be held), that require WIAA licensed officials, you would not be eligible.

Whether you request a refund or not, as long as you have completed the exam and video requirements by the due date, your classification level will be adjusted accordingly for 2020-21.

Licensing for the 2020-21 school year will open May 1, 2020. We will not be charging any late fee for the 2020-21 school year.

Therefore, if you choose to renew after the June 5, 2020 deadline date the $30 late fee will not be charged.

As a reminder – an official’s license is good from August 1 to July 31 and must be renew each year.

Please contact me with any questions you may have.

Thank you for being a WIAA licensed official.

Take care,

Joan Gralla

WIAA Office Manager/Officials”
